Kwangwoon University’s HUSS Center Successfully Concludes the "2026 Global Symbiosis Generative AI English Translation Competition"
The Humanities-Utmost-Sharing System (HUSS) Center at Kwangwoon University (led by Director Professor Lee Hye-young) successfully hosted the "2026 Global Symbiosis Generative AI English Translation Competition." Following the success of previous years, the competition was organized to promote sustainable global symbiosis and mutual growth. The award ceremony was held on campus on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
Now in its third year, the competition featured rigorous English-to-Korean and Korean-to-English translation categories. It required participants to translate professional texts across a wide range of fields, including the humanities, social sciences, business, economics, science, technology, and IT.
A total of 60 students competed fiercely. The submitted translations were strictly evaluated based on three core criteria: fluency of expression, appropriateness of style, and accuracy of meaning.
Song Hye-won from the Department of English Industry claimed the Grand Prize (First Place). Excellence Awards were presented to Ju Deok-jin (Department of Electronic Materials Engineering), Lee Jung-min (School of Business), and Yoo Su-min (School of Media and Communication). In addition, ten students received Participation Awards, along with designated scholarships and certificates.
"This competition was designed to cultivate multilingual communication skills essential in today's rapidly shifting global and digital environments, and to reflect on the importance of delivering polished, high-quality meanings based on a deep understanding of language and culture," said Lee Hye-young, Director of the HUSS Center. "We hope this serves as a valuable opportunity for students to explore the future of translation, where generative AI and human creativity harmoniously combine, helping them grow into global talents equipped with critical thinking and convergent capabilities."
Professor Lee Il-jae of the Department of English Industry, who spearheaded the event, emphasized: "While the remarkable advancement of generative AI and machine translation technologies has significantly lowered language barriers, human capacity is still indispensable to accurately interpret and convey the historical and cultural context and subtle nuances embedded in language." He added, "Translation transcends simple language conversion; it is an intellectual and cultural practice that connects different cultures and values. As a core competency for communication and coexistence in the global era, it deserves a more significant emphasis in university liberal arts education."
