Professor Choi Jae-woon’s Book War Without Humans Selected for the Sejong Book Support Program 

  Professor Choi Jae-woon of the Department of Business Administration at Kwangwoon University has been selected for the Sejong Book Support Program for his book War Without Humans, which explores the rise of AI-powered machines of war.

  Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and administered by the Korea Publication Industry Promotion Agency, the Sejong Book Support Program is one of Korea’s most prestigious book recognition and distribution programs. It selects outstanding academic and general-interest books for distribution to public and specialized libraries across the country. This year, a total of 774 titles were selected, including 429 in the general-interest category and 345 in the academic category. Can humanity truly emerge as the ultimate victor in wars from which humans are gradually disappearing? War Without Humans seeks to answer this question. 

  The book provides an overview of the history of technology and warfare and examines how AI is being deployed on recent battlefields, including in Ukraine and the Middle East. It also carefully explores the ethical dilemmas posed by technologies that are gradually moving beyond direct human control and considers how we should handle the “new Promethean fire” that has been placed in our hands.

  The development of AI and its growing use in military applications are an unstoppable trend. Drawing on this understanding of the current reality, Professor Choi asks what choices remain available to us. Rather than embracing either uncritical technological optimism or apocalyptic pessimism, the book calls for a reconsideration of what it means to be human in the age of AI.
