Kwangwoon University’s Global Symbiosis HUSS Center Successfully Concludes the "2026 HUSS Convergence Camp & HUSS Academy"
The Global Symbiosis Humanities-Utmost-Sharing System (HUSS) Center at Kwangwoon University participated in the "2026 HUSS Convergence Camp & HUSS Academy," held from Tuesday, June 30, to Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Lahan Select Gyeongju in Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Now in its fourth year, the HUSS Convergence Camp was designed to provide a venue for humanities and social science students to showcase their convergent competencies and to offer creative, cross-disciplinary education. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Education, the National Research Foundation of Korea, HUSS, and Gyeongsangbuk-do, this year's academy was held under the theme: "Communicating through the Language of Humanities, Resolving through the Technology of Convergence—The Humanities & Social Sciences Basecamp that Breaks the Boundaries of Thought."
The event drew over 1,500 students and university officials from 55 institutions across the country. It featured a diverse lineup of educational programs aimed at expanding inter-university networks and strengthening humanities-based convergence capabilities.
Throughout the camp, participants engaged in professional academy lectures, cultural excursions around Gyeongju, a book debate competition, the "HUSS of Rock" cultural festival, performance forums, and lobby programs. These activities provided students with invaluable opportunities to nurture their humanistic knowledge and convergent thinking. Furthermore, students from different institutions bridged the gaps between their respective majors and universities to collaborate, network, and share broader perspectives.
During the professional lecture series, Professor Lee Jun-hee from the Department of Law (who also serves as the Deputy Director of the HUSS Center) delivered a presentation titled "Reflections on the Value of Labor for Global Symbiosis in the AI Era." Professor Lee traced the historical shifts and formation of the concept of labor amidst rapid AI advancements. His lecture resonated deeply with the audience, providing meaningful insights into the enduring value of human labor in contemporary society.
In the highly competitive Book Debate Competition, Cho Sung-woo, a Public Administration student representing the Kwangwoon University Global Symbiosis Consortium, claimed the Grand Prize (First Place). Analyzing the book Moral AI, Cho earned high praise for his logical eloquence and presentation skills by articulately breaking down core dilemmas of the AI era, including ethical judgments by AI, personal data privacy, and intellectual property rights for creative works.
"Thanks to the guidance of my professors and the insightful debates with my fellow participants, I was able to view the ethics and responsibility of AI from a much higher perspective," Cho Sung-woo stated in his acceptance speech. "I learned that the more complex a problem is, the closer we get to a solution by engaging in open dialogue."
Participating students from Kwangwoon University expressed that networking with peers from various majors nationwide allowed them to step outside their own academic fields and adopt broader mindsets and diverse viewpoints. They added that they hope these platforms for convergence and exchange continue to expand, offering growth opportunities for future students.
Hwang Yun-seo, a student from the Division of International Studies who attended the academy, shared her experience: "I initially joined this event with a vague anxiety that humanities and social science students might be completely replaced due to the rapid advancement of AI. However, by engaging in specialized lectures, in-depth studies, and the book debate, I rediscovered the vital role and significance of the humanities in the AI era. It was a profoundly meaningful time that helped me reflect deeply on the mindset I should maintain as a college student moving forward."
Meanwhile, the Global Symbiosis Consortium is spearheaded by Kwangwoon University as the host institution, partnering with Kookmin University, Sun Moon University, Yeungnam University, and Honam University under the Ministry of Education’s HUSS initiative. The Kwangwoon HUSS Center remains dedicated to nurturing convergent leaders by operating interdisciplinary educational and research programs that bridge the gap between the humanities, social sciences, and cutting-edge science and technology.
