“Organic Linkage of Guidance Systems is Key to the Successful Settlement of Major Selection Autonomy”

Vice President Seok-jae Jeong (Head of the University Innovation Project Group) has been actively disseminating Kwangwoon University’s educational innovation cases across the country. Centered on the theme, An Organic Linkage Model between Class Advisor Systems and Major Exploration Guidance for the Successful Settlement of Major selection Autonomy,” Vice President Jeong was invited as a consecutive speaker at several high-profile forums. These include the 2nd Academic Advising Forum at Seoul National University (Dec 16), the 2025 University Innovation Support Project Metropolitan Area Innovation Networking & Performance Diffusion Forum (Jan 15), and the 2025 University Innovation Forum for Sustainable Development (Jan 29).

His lectures garnered significant attention for presenting a practical and structured operating model developed by Kwangwoon University. This model specifically addresses the common challenges many institutions have faced since the introduction of Major ion Autonomy, such as gaps in student guidance, the formalization of major selection, and limitations in career linkage. The on-site response was remarkably enthusiastic, with deep-dive questions continuing well after the presentations ended, leading to a steady stream of invitations for additional lectures from various other universities and organizations nationwide.

From the “freedom” to choose a major to “responsible design”

Vice President Seok-jae Jeong emphasized during his presentation, “The essence of Major selection Autonomy is not merely expanding options, but simultaneously building a guidance system that empowers students to design their own majors based on deep self-understanding.”

To achieve this, Kwangwoon University has established a model that organically integrates the ▲Class Advisor System (operating from the early stages of admission), ▲systematic major exploration programs, and a ▲support structure that links academic, career, and curriculum information. This model is uniquely designed to help students set their academic direction through continuous consultations with advisors right from the start, ensuring that the exploration process leads directly to rational major selection and strategic career design.

Organic Linkage: Class Advisor System and Major Exploration Guidance

In his presentation, Vice President Seok-jae Jeong explained Kwangwoon University’s innovation model through three strategic stages: ▲Institutional Design, ▲Operational Structure, and ▲Field Application. He particularly emphasized that the Class Advisor System has evolved beyond a simple administrative role. It is now a comprehensive guidance structure integrated with major exploration curriculum and extracurricular programs, focusing on each student's individual interests, competencies, and career aspirations.

During this process, various support mechanisms—such as student mentoring, the provision of major and course information, and the coordination of course registration with extracurricular activities—function organically. This approach drew significant interest from attendees for transforming major selection into a proactive exploration process, where students independently set their goals and design their own career roadmaps, rather than it being a one-time decision.

Providing "Actionable Solutions" for National Challenges

The primary reason Vice President Jeong’s lectures received such high acclaim is that Kwangwoon University’s case is a field-proven execution model, not just a theoretical proposal. Many university officials from across the country noted that the structure is “immediately applicable to institutions preparing for or already implementing Major selection Autonomy.”

Following the lectures, intense Q&A sessions took place, focusing on practical topics such as ▲advisor role-setting methods, ▲strategies for student engagement during the exploration phase, and ▲ways to link the model with academic regulations. These inquiries demonstrated that the Kwangwoon University model resonates deeply with the real-world concerns currently faced by higher education institutions.

Moving into the "Diffusion" Phase of Innovation

Vice President Jeong stated, “Kwangwoon University’s Major selection Autonomy model is the result of accumulated innovation experience gained through the University Innovation Support Project. We aim to contribute to the qualitative leap of higher education by continuing to share and disseminate these achievements among universities.”

Moving forward, Kwangwoon University plans to systematically organize and spread its achievements in Major selection Autonomy and academic/career guidance innovation.

Based on the University Innovation Support Project, the university remains committed to leading student-led learning designs and establishing sustainable models for educational innovation.
