
Leiden Ranks Kwangwoon University 6th in Korea for 2025
November, 2025, Kwangwoon University has ranked 6th in Korea under the traditional methodology and 7th under the newly introduced Open Edition of the 2025 Leiden Ranking, published by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University. The results reaffirm the university’s global-level research impact.
The Leiden Ranking is an annual global assessment of research influence,
evaluating universities that have published at least 800 Web of Science–indexed
papers. Rankings are based on the proportion of a university’s publications
that fall within the top 10% most cited worldwide.
During the evaluation period from 2020 to 2023, Kwangwoon University produced 1,049 papers, of which 99 (9.5%) ranked among the top 10% most cited. This placed Kwangwoon 6th nationwide and 2nd in Seoul, demonstrating the institution’s rising academic influence.
Kwangwoon University also performed strongly in the new Open Edition, which evaluates universities with at least 1,500 papers indexed in the OpenAlex database. Of 1,102 papers, 121 (11.0%) were among the top 10% most cited, earning the university 7th place nationally.
Through sustained research capacity-building and innovative scholarly activity, the university has not only achieved quantitative growth but also delivered significant improvement in research impact, with visible achievements in global academic evaluations. Recently, 18 Kwangwoon professors were named among the world’s top 2% scientists, as selected by Stanford University and Elsevier—further demonstrating the academic excellence of its faculty.
